Lake Tahoe Triple Crown

With the formation of the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association in 2018 and official establishment of course and rules for the 12-mile True Width™, the Lake Tahoe Triple Crown of open water swimming was defined and exclusively created.

Combining the historic sanctioned courses of the 21.3-mile Length and 10.6-mile Vikingsholm with the  12-mile True Width, these courses are the three jewels of the Lake Tahoe Triple Crown™ as defined, observed, and awarded by the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association.

Prior to 2018 and the formation of the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association, Tahoe swims were independent marathon swims and not governed by an official local sanctioning organization. Swims considered for the Lake Tahoe Triple Crown after 2018 must be observed under the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association.

Official Policy on Lake Tahoe Triple Crown™ Recognition

The Lake Tahoe Triple Crown™ is awarded exclusively by the Lake Tahoe Open Water Swimming Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed to promote integrity, transparency, and safety in marathon swimming on Lake Tahoe.

To qualify for recognition, all three swims, Length, Vikingsholm, and True Width™, must meet the following requirements:

  • Each swim must follow the route defined by LTOWSA, including its established start and finish locations.
  • Each swim must be observed in real time by a trained, neutral observer assigned by LTOWSA.
  • Each swim must be documented and submitted through LTOWSA’s established review and ratification process.
  • Each swim must comply with LTOWSA’s published rules, including its restrictions on assistance.

As of August 16, 2026, LTOWSA has documented 354 marathon swims and recognized 29 Lake Tahoe Triple Crown achievements under one consistent standard, with four additional Triple Crown achievements pending ratification.*

Other individuals and organizations may define different routes, rename courses, or use their own documentation and verification processes. Swimmers remain free to pursue those swims, but they do not qualify for LTOWSA recognition or inclusion in the Lake Tahoe Triple Crown™.

These swims may differ from LTOWSA recognized swims in material ways, including route alignment, start and finish locations, safety procedures, observer independence, and verification standards.

This policy ensures that every swimmer seeking LTOWSA recognition is measured against the same objective requirements. It also protects the integrity of the Lake Tahoe Triple Crown™ and respects the swimmers who completed all three courses under a consistent and impartial standard.

*The total includes ratified and non-ratified swims documented by LTOWSA.
